THE PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR IS HERE!

via Dezeen

With all the holiday hullabaloo (each year somehow seems to fly by faster than the last!) I almost missed one of the highlights of the design calendar, Pantone's announcement of the color of the year earlier this month. Much more than simply a reflection of current trends, the Pantone Institute's color of the year serves as a marker of a "concerted cultural moment," and requires thoughtful consideration across the realms of fashion, global events, and beyond.

This year's hue, Living Coral, is "an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone" that is simultaneously vibrant yet mellow, embracing us with warmth and comfort amidst an ever more digital world. Despite advances in technology and social media, the joyful and optimistic hue represents our need for authentic connection and intimacy, and nods to the shelter offered by coral reefs within the natural ecosystem.

In contrast to last year's electrifying Ultraviolet, Living Coral is more inclusive and less controversial. It complements all genders and skin tones, and can be as easily paired with neutrals as with bold contrasting tones.

Since color is an equalizing lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities, global brands leverage the power, psychology, and emotion of color in their design strategy and brand identity. As such, get ready to start seeing coral popping up on the runway, in interiors, and beyond!
