2021 Color of the Year

As if there wasn't already much to look forward to in 2021 (like that it won't be 2020 for instance), The Pantone Institute revealed the colors of the year earlier this week. Chosen as a meaningful expression of our collective identity, these colors reflect the current global climate and influence trends in fashion, marketing, and beyond in the coming year. In line with last year's novel move of introducing a pair of colors instead of just one as in previous years, we again are presented with the dichotomy that is Ultimate Gray and Illuminating. According to the Pantone Institute, "the two striking hues highlight how different elements come together to support one another," much like a strong dependable rock foundation against the hopeful glimmer of sunlight.

Pantone's thoughtful trend analysis is influenced by events that capture worldwide attention, and the ripple effects are seen in the fields of product development, graphic design, packaging, the entertainment industry, and global brands who strive to effectively leverage the power, psychology, and emotion of color in their design strategy. This year's color combination gives us the combination of resilience and hope that is essential to the human spirit.
