Mood Board Monday

Seeing Stripes

It's been a hot minute since our last Mood Board Monday, all the way back in January before the name Wuhan triggered a whole new set of vernacular: coronavirus, quarantine, social distancing. This month, stripes take center stage, but while in seasons past bold stripes have conjured up idyllic holidays in the south of France, stripes seem at home in a new world in which nothing is black and white. Historically the costume of prisoners and clowns, bold contrasting stripes represent the realm of unclear boundaries and violated social order. Over time, the pattern was adopted by gondoliers and seamen, translating into an association with a seaside along with the sense of peaceful relaxation that we are familiar with today. Layer a bold nautical stripe with a floral pattern for a playful splash, or a subtle pinstripe to inject some visual interest in an otherwise bland space. Whichever speaks to you, stripes have proven their impact wherever they're drawn.
